Building on 25 Years of Care: MESH Hospital Modernisation.
Manukau Health Park (Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand's MESH Hospital) is a landmark facility that has been delivering healthcare in South Auckland since its official opening by Prime Minister Jim Bolger in 1997. The facility underwent a $316 million redevelopment to upgrade the hospital and expand its services, enhancing one of the country's busiest healthcare hubs. Hampton Jones provided lead design and building surveying services for the re-cladding of the existing MESH hospital building as part of the broader redevelopment project, which also included three new hospital wings.
The original hospital building required modernisation to address systemic weathertightness defects and improve long-term durability. A critical requirement was minimising disruption within the active hospital environment to ensure patients and healthcare professionals remained fully supported throughout the works.
Our Approach
We designed a contemporary, lightweight façade and joinery system that:
Modernised the original hospital building
Addressed weathertightness defects
Improved long-term durability and performance
Aesthetically complemented the new hospital wings and the surrounding environment
The re-cladding provided a sustainable solution by extending the building's lifespan, ensuring continued support for essential patient care in the community.
Key Deliverables
Lead design services for hospital re-cladding
Building surveying services throughout the project
Contemporary façade design integrating with new hospital wings
Weathertightness remediation solutions
Coordination within an active hospital environment
The Outcome
The broader redevelopment introduced vital new facilities, including a renal centre, operating theatres, radiology hubs, and advanced breast-care services. This investment was crucial for meeting the region's future healthcare needs, with outpatient demand in Counties Manukau expected to increase by more than 20% over the next decade.
