Library Refurbishment and Interior Design
Hampton Jones delivered a comprehensive interior design refurbishment for a public library on the Whangaparāoa Peninsula in Auckland. Completed in May 2016, this upgrade focused on creating a welcoming, functional, and future-ready community space that enhances user experience and encourages engagement across all age groups.
The project centred on revitalising the interior environment to better serve modern library users. A key driver was to draw visitors naturally into the heart of the space, improving flow, visibility, and overall comfort. The result is a library that feels open, intuitive, and inviting, supporting both quiet reading and active community use.
A core part of the design involved reconfiguring the layout, including relocating the reception area and introducing a new front desk and service pod. This improved wayfinding and created a more approachable and efficient entry point for visitors. Thoughtful space planning underpinned the entire project, with carefully considered furniture layouts, updated colour schemes, and designated zones to support different user needs.
To enhance the user experience, Hampton Jones incorporated a range of engaging and functional design features. Reading nooks were integrated among shelving to provide quiet, comfortable spaces for individuals, while a playful hopscotch pathway leads children into a dedicated area of the library. A standout feature stair with vibrant carpeting adds colour and visual interest, reinforcing the family-friendly atmosphere.
The refurbishment also included a full lighting upgrade, replacing all existing fittings with energy-efficient LED lighting to improve visibility and reduce operational costs. Externally, shade sails were installed in the courtyard to extend usable space and provide shelter for community activities. Soft furnishings and custom furniture selections further contribute to a cohesive, comfortable environment that encourages longer visits.
The completed library now delivers a significantly improved experience for both staff and visitors. The refreshed environment has increased user engagement, with visitors feeling more comfortable asking questions and spending time within the space. The furniture and interactive elements, particularly in the children’s area, are heavily used and positively received, supporting the library’s role as a vibrant community hub.
This project highlights Hampton Jones’ hands-on approach to interior design and space planning, combining practical functionality with creative design solutions to deliver meaningful outcomes for public sector clients.
