Matt Graduated in 2001 with an honours degree in Building from Nottingham Trent University. Matt is a Technical member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and incorporated Member of the Chartered Institute of Building. After moving to New Zealand in 2003 Matt became a Weathertight Assessor and a Registered member of the New Zealand Institute of Building Surveyors (MNZIBS).
Matt started his career in 1988 as a self-employed qualified Carpenter and Joiner working on new residential homes and additions. In 1995 Matt joined a large-volume house builder as an assistant site manager and within a year was promoted to site manager, managing the construction of several large, award wining, residential developments with capital values of between $20-30m.
Matt opted for a career change in 1999 to work in the area of Building Control for the National House Building Council (approved certifier and warranty provider) as a Building Inspector. However, he was soon promoted to Claims Investigator whose role was to diagnose the cause of building failures and to establish the validity of structural damage claims, prepare remedial schemes and project manage the repairs. An additional role included conducting dispute resolutions between homeowners and builders as an alternative to Arbitration.
Upon moving to New Zealand Matt was employed by Joyce Group Auckland Ltd as a Building Consultant and provided a range of services including, building defect reports, condition reports, weathertightness investigations, expert opinion reports, peer reviews, due diligence surveys and pre-purchase inspections. Other works included compiling repair schemes and the project management of both new projects and remedial work schemes. During this period Matt has obtained extensive experience as an Expert Witness in respect of Weathertightness claims and construction related disputes.
In 2005 Matt left Joyce Group Auckland Ltd (now CoveKinloch Consulting Ltd) to join Brian Jones and James Bundy at Hampton Jones.
Matt lives in West Auckland with his wife and three children.
