Q&A with James Green attending CIOB Members’ Forum in Toronto 2018
Last month, James Green (Hampton Jones’ Chartered Quantity Surveyor) attended The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Members Forum 2018 in Toronto, Canada. This is an annual event bringing together leading construction professionals from all global regional hubs to represent the interests of all members.
James was formally elected as Oceania Representative by members in 2017. Since then he has liaised with members in the region to gather topics, points of interest and any recent issues. These formed part of a report to the Board of Trustees which was discussed at the Forum, and outcomes will be reported back to regional members.
At the Members Forum, the CEO of Gleeds Americas and the CIOB’s 115th President Chris Soffe, was a guest speaker on current challenges facing the industry, his vision of the future and views on our roles as construction professionals influencing the industry. James also enjoyed participating in a televised debate on “The Sustainable Future of the Construction Industry”.
What is the CIOB Member’s Forum?
The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is a worldwide professional body, founded in 1832, representing construction and property professionals, with around 50,000 members. The Royal Charter promotes the science and practice of building and construction, operating worldwide in the development, conservation and improvement of the built environment.
Why is it held?
All global representatives fed back knowledge, strategy and information at the Members’ Forum on behalf of the members that they represent, and the programme included events such as seminars, workshops, site visits and debates with local TV coverage, ending with the new President’s Inaugural Dinner. This year’s focus for several events was on quality and sustainable construction.
Who attends the Member’s Forum?
Attendees at the Members’ Forum were from a wide range of backgrounds. Staff and Trustees attended, but the majority of those taking part were Global Hub representatives (approximately 90 people in total). The role of each Regional Hub representative is to attend and contribute actively and effectively, as well as to offer appropriate contribution and make considered judgements as a member.
Who was your favourite guest speaker and why?
This year saw the appointment of the CIOB’s 115th President (the Institute is almost 200 years old!), Chris Soffe – also the CEO of Gleeds Americas. In his inaugural speech at the CIOB’s 2018 Members’ Forum, Chris focused on climate change and collaboration between professional and educational institutes.
I had some really interesting discussions with Chris about the global challenges of disaster recovery, recounting my experience in earthquake response, his involvement with the World Trade Centre, current global events, and how our industry and resources may cope with these events in the future.
What was your favourite part of the overall conference?
A debate on ‘The Sustainable Future of the Construction Industry’ and a workshop considering in-depth what the future of the Construction Industry will look like, how we must adapt to cope with current issues such as skills shortages, new technologies, environmental issues, demands from society and the shared role of Professional Institutes.
